Landscape Crew Member
Position Summary
The Landscape Construction Crew Member is responsible for working with the Crew Foreman in an assigned landscape construction project to ensure quality and timely completion of work site requirements. This includes following the direction of the daily work the Landscape Crew Leader assigns and performing labor and tasks necessary for the installation of design elements. The Landscape Crew Member may specialize in one or more of the following aspects of landscape design: hardscapes, planting, and grading.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Work at the direction of the Landscape Crew Leader.
- Follows the Landscape Crew Leader's examples regarding company policies and procedures such as attendance, conduct, and dress code.
- Communicates with and provides exceptional customer service with property owners without Landscape Crew Leader.
- Identify problems at the work site and follow through appropriately, consulting with Landscape Crew Leader.
- Ensures daily preparation of trucks and equipment, loading and securing equipment, plant, and hardscape material needed.
- Performs planting of trees, shrubs, annuals, and perennials and installing wood and stone mulch.
- Installs hardscape, water features, retaining walls, boulders, wall stone, pavers, etc.
- Performs all tasks involved in the installation, such as digging, shoveling, raking, sweeping, pruning, watering, picking stones, and clearing of debris.
- Operates equipment such as trucks, skid loaders, compactors, trenchers, masonry saws, etc.
- Uses hand tools such as wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes, picks, brooms, etc.
- Ensures daily maintenance of tools and equipment (cleaning, sharpening, greasing, fueling, etc.)
- Assist with snow removal during the winter months as business needs dictate.
- Ensures team’s compliance with company safety policies and procedures at all times.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- This is not a supervisory role however, self-accountability is required.
Working Conditions
- Work is primarily performed outdoors during all seasons.
- Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, including inclement weather (rain, snow, heat, or cold).
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Hearing protection is required for duties such as equipment operations that expose the individual to elevated noise levels.
- Duties of this position may expose the individual to chemicals and fertilizers.
- Overnight travel will be required intermittently.
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual will satisfactorily demonstrate and perform each essential duty. The ability to communicate and interact positively with all Company personnel, regulatory agencies, customers, consultants, and other contractor personnel is also required. The requirements below represent the required knowledge, skill, and/or ability.
Education, Certification, and License:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license with a good driving record is required; a commercial driver’s license (CDL) is helpful.
Experience:
- Previous landscape experience is preferred.
- Previous equipment operating experience (trencher, excavator, loader, bobcat, skid steer or other used in landscape installation) is required.
Specific Requirements:
- Demonstrated a solid “What needs to be completed next” mentality.
- Ability to suggest solutions to issues as they arise on job sites.
- Ability to work with a Landscape Crew Lead simultaneously.
- Applied knowledge of effective landscaping skills and techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret design plans.
- Basic knowledge of trees, shrubs and other landscape products.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in English.
Physical Requirements:
- Stands and walks for long periods of time throughout the day.
- Squats, stoops, or kneels and lifts objects from ground frequently.
- Full extension of arms above head and in front of body.
- Consistently lifts weight of up to 50 pounds.
- Occasionally carries and pushes/pulls weights of up to 50 pounds.
- Fine motor skills are required to use small equipment and hand tools.
Job Specifications
- This is a Full-time Seasonal position.
- Typical work hours are Monday through Friday from 6:30 am to 5:00 pm (40-50 hours per week) during our peak season (approximately April to November). Saturday hours as needed.
- Hours vary in the winter months (approximately December through March) based on snow removal.
- Overtime may be required as workload dictates.
